Chapter 5: Green Skills-II — notes
The chapter’s 6 parts in the book’s order — the first idea of each and the points Medha Ma’am writes on the board — and the summary at the end. The full lesson and a check question for each part are in the app.
1. What is Sustainable Development?
Okay, so think about everything around us — air, water, soil, forests.
- • Sustainable development: meets present needs
- • without harming future generations' ability to meet theirs
- • Balance: economic growth + environment care + social well-being
- • Defined by World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987
- • Example: sustainable agriculture avoids harmful chemicals
2. Problems Related to Sustainable Development
There are three major problems that come in the way of sustainable development: food, water and fuel.
- • Three problems: Food, Water, Fuel
- • Food: less fertile land, soil nutrients depleted by chemicals
- • Water: rivers/ponds polluted by garbage dumping
- • Fuel: cutting trees affects climate, causes floods/extreme weather
- • Solution: solar energy (unlimited, clean)
- • Example: Charanka Gujarat Solar Park - 600 MW
3. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Okay, so let's talk about the Sustainable Development Goals, we call them SDGs.
- • 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- • Launched by United Nations, September 2015, New York
- • Forms the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
- • Issues covered: poverty, gender equality, water, energy, climate change, biodiversity
- • Core skills needed: environmental awareness + willingness to learn
4. Sustainable Development Initiatives
Okay, so some innovators have come up with really wonderful eco-friendly ideas.
- • Mr Avasth Hedge: 100% bio-degradable bag (dissolves in hot water)
- • Narayana Peesapaty: edible cutlery made from grain
- • Organic farming: uses natural fertilisers like cow dung
- • Sustainable practices: organic farming, vermi-composting, rainwater harvesting
5. Our Role in Sustainable Development
Okay, so let's talk about our role in sustainable development.
- • Problem: we take from nature, give little back
- • Factories pollute air; garbage in landfills; sewage pollutes seas
- • Kulhads initiative: Ministry of Railways, Varanasi & Raibareilly
- • Advantage 1: reduces tree cutting for paper cups
- • Advantage 2: job creation for potters
- • Advantage 3: reduces plastic waste
6. Ways to Contribute Towards the Goals
Okay, so each of us can actually help reach these goals, just through small daily actions.
- • Quality Education: help friends study, stay in school
- • Clean Water: build toilets, stop open defecation
- • Clean Energy: solar power, biogas
- • Reduced Inequalities: include everyone
- • Sustainable Cities: switch off lights/fans, use LED bulbs
- • Responsible Consumers: reuse, cloth bags, repair leaks, sort garbage
Summary
Okay, so let's look back at everything we covered in this chapter. We started with sustainable development — meeting our needs today, without harming the ability of future generations to meet theirs. It's about balancing three things, economic growth, care for the environment, and social well-being. Then we looked at three major problems that threaten this balance — food, water and fuel. We saw how solar energy offers a clean solution, and you remember the example — the Charanka Gujarat Solar Park. We also talked about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, launched by the United Nations in 2015. These goals are a universal call — to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. We saw some real initiatives too, the bio-degradable bag, edible cutlery, organic farming, and Kulhads — all of these show sustainable development actually happening around us. And finally, we learnt that each one of us has a role to play, through quality education, clean water and sanitation, clean energy, reducing inequalities, building sustainable cities, and becoming responsible consumers who protect life on land and below water. So tell me — out of all these, which one idea do you think you can start practising from tomorrow?
