The chapter’s 7 parts in the book’s order — the first idea of each and the points Medha Ma’am writes on the board — and the summary at the end. The full lesson and a check question for each part are in the app.

  1. 1. Methods of Communication

Let's start with the word 'communication'.

    • • Communication = 'to share' (Latin commūnicāre)
    • • 3 parts: Transmitting, Listening, Feedback
    • • Customer asks = transmitting (orally)
    • • Salesperson = listener; reply = feedback
    • • Elements: Sender, Message, Channel, Receiver, Feedback
    • • Choose method by: audience, costs, type of information, urgency
  2. 2. Verbal Communication

Okay, so let's talk about verbal communication.

    • • Verbal = sounds, words, language, speech
    • • Types: Interpersonal, Written, Small Group, Public
    • • Advantage: quick response
    • • Disadvantage: confusing if wrong words used
    • • Think before you speak; be clear; be confident
  3. 3. Non-verbal and Visual Communication

Okay, so let's talk about non-verbal communication.

    • • 55% body movements, face, arms
    • • 38% voice, tone, pauses
    • • 7% words → 93% non-verbal
    • • Finger on lips = silence; nod = yes
    • • Visual: messages through images only
  4. 4. Communication Cycle and Feedback

Okay, so let's talk about feedback.

    • • Feedback = receiver's response to sender
    • • Types: Positive, Negative, No feedback
    • • Good feedback: specific, helpful, kind
    • • Also: timely, polite, continuing support
    • • Positive: 'Great job!'
  5. 5. Barriers to Effective Communication

Okay, so communication works well only when we follow seven simple rules.

    • • 7Cs: Clear, Concise, Concrete, Correct, Coherent, Complete, Courteous
    • • Barriers: Physical, Linguistic, Interpersonal, Organisational, Cultural
    • • Linguistic: slang, jargon
    • • Overcome: simple language, visuals, translator, respect
  6. 6. Writing Skills: Parts of Speech

Okay, so let's talk about sentences and phrases.

    • • Sentence = complete thought; phrase = not complete
    • • TINS: Titles, I, Names, Starting letter
    • • Basic: Noun, Pronoun, Adjective, Verb, Adverb
    • • Kavita (noun) quickly (adverb) read
    • • Supporting: Articles, Conjunctions, Prepositions, Interjections
  7. 7. Writing Skills: Sentences

Okay, so let's talk about sentences.

    • • Subject does, Verb = action, Object receives
    • • bicycle = direct; her son = indirect
    • • Active: Radha is reading a book.
    • • Passive: A book is being read by Radha.
    • • Declarative (.), Interrogative (?), Exclamatory (!), Imperative (. or !)
    • • Paragraph = sentences with a common idea

Summary

Okay, so let's go back over everything you've learnt in this lesson. Communication means "to share". It has three parts — transmitting, listening and feedback. And it needs five elements — sender, message, channel, receiver and feedback. Then we looked at four types of verbal communication — interpersonal, written, small group and public. You also found something interesting — around 93% of communication is non-verbal. And visual communication shares messages through images. You learnt that feedback completes the communication cycle. A good feedback is specific, helpful and kind. We also studied the 7Cs, the five barriers to effective communication, and ways to overcome them. Finally, you learnt about capitalisation, punctuation, and the parts of speech. You saw how a sentence is built from a subject, a verb and an object. A sentence can be active or passive, it can be of four types, and sentences together form paragraphs. That's a lot we've covered, isn't it? Tell me — which of these topics did you enjoy the most?
