Model answer · Sustainable development definition

    1. 1.Sustainable development is the development that satisfies the needs of the present without compromising the capacity of future generations, guaranteeing the balance between economic growth, care for the environment and social well-being. Since most natural resources are scarce, it calls for their careful use so that development does not destroy the environment.2 marks
    • Write "without compromising the capacity of future generations" in your definition.
    • Name the balance between "economic growth, care for the environment and social well-being".

    Ask Medha’s AI teacher

Model answer · problems of sustainable development

    1. 1.We use fresh water from rivers and ponds for drinking and cleaning but dump garbage into them, so the rivers and ponds are getting polluted and after several years we will have no clean water for our use. Water conservation and recycling are essential to prevent water scarcity and pollution.1 mark
    2. 2.We use a lot of wood from trees as fuels, and if we continue to use fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas, very soon we will run out of these natural resources. The limited reserves of fossil fuels and their adverse impact on the environment demand the use of renewable energy sources.1 mark
    • In the water paragraph, write both 'water conservation' and 'recycling' as ways to prevent scarcity and pollution.
    • In the fuel paragraph, name 'fossil fuels' (coal, oil, natural gas) and state the need for 'renewable energy sources'.

    6. Give any two examples of how individual choices and behaviours can contribute in achieving sustainable development.

Model answer · individual role, sustainable development

    1. 1.Individual choices and behaviours can contribute in achieving sustainable development. One example is saving energy by switching off lights and fans when not in use, as this reduces unnecessary consumption of resources. We can also become responsible by reusing paper, glass, plastic and water, and by taking cloth bags to the market instead of using plastic bags.1 mark
    2. 2.Another example of how individual choices and behaviours can contribute in achieving sustainable development is planting more trees to replace the ones that we have cut, since cutting of trees leads to soil erosion and makes land dry and unusable for cultivation. We can also use energy efficient lights (LED bulbs) and appliances and promote the use of solar power to meet our electricity needs without polluting the environment.1 mark
    • Write one clear example for each point, such as switching off lights/fans or using cloth bags for the first, and planting trees or using LED bulbs/solar power for the second.
    • Use the exact phrase 'sustainable development' and mention 'individual choices and behaviours' to directly answer in the question's own terms.
    • Do not repeat the same example in both paragraphs; keep each example distinct.
