  1. Q1Long answer5 marksAsked: 2024

    (a) What is a chemical reaction ? Describe one activity each to show that a chemical change has occurred in which (i) change of colour, and (ii) change in temperature has taken place. OR (b) (i) Define a decomposition reaction. How can we say that (I) electrolysis of water, and (II) blackening of silver bromide when exposed to sunlight, are decomposition reactions ? Mention the type of energy involved in each case. (ii) "The type of reactions in which (I) calcium oxide is formed, and (II) calcium hydroxide is formed are opposite reactions to each other." Justify this statement with the help of chemical equations.

Model answer · chemical reaction, observable changes

    1. 1.(a) A chemical reaction is a process in which the reactants change into products. It involves the breaking and making of bonds between atoms to produce new substances that have properties different from those of the reactants.1 mark
    2. 2.(i) Change of colour: Take about 2 mL of colourless potassium iodide solution in a test tube. Add a few drops of colourless lead nitrate solution to it. A yellow precipitate of lead iodide forms at once. The colour changes from a colourless solution to a yellow precipitate, which shows that a chemical change has taken place. Pb(NO3)2(aq) + 2KI(aq) → PbI2(s) (yellow precipitate) + 2KNO3(aq) (Lead nitrate) + (Potassium iodide) → (Lead iodide) + (Potassium nitrate)2 marks
    3. 3.(ii) Change in temperature: Take a small amount of calcium oxide (quick lime) in a beaker and slowly add water to it. Touch the beaker. It feels very hot. Calcium oxide reacts vigorously with water to produce slaked lime (calcium hydroxide), releasing a large amount of heat. The rise in temperature shows that a chemical change has taken place. CaO(s) + H2O(l) → Ca(OH)2(aq) + Heat (Quick lime) + (Water) → (Slaked lime)2 marks
    • Write the colour change in full: "from a colourless solution to a yellow precipitate".
    • Write "+ Heat" on the product side of CaO(s) + H2O(l) → Ca(OH)2(aq).
    • In the definition, write "breaking and making of bonds between atoms to produce new substances".
