The chapter’s 8 parts in the book’s order — the first idea of each and the points Medha Ma’am writes on the board — and the summary at the end. The full lesson and a check question for each part are in the app.

  1. 1. Who is an entrepreneur?

Okay, so, there are two ways to earn a living.

    • • Wage employment: work for others, get paid
    • • Self-employment: start a business to meet people's needs
    • • Entrepreneur: self-employed + new ideas + takes risks
    • • Ramu: waits for customers = businessman
    • • Ramya: brings customers, adds seeds and flowers = entrepreneur
  2. 2. What entrepreneurs do in society

Okay, so let's talk about what entrepreneurs do for the people around them.

    • • Market: people who buy + people who sell
    • • Demand = a product or service people want
    • • Roles: fulfil customer needs
    • • use local materials
    • • help society
    • • Aditi: buys from a woman, hires two men
  3. 3. How entrepreneurs affect society

Okay, so, entrepreneurs change the society they live in, and they do it in three ways.

    • • Create jobs
    • • Sharing of wealth
    • • Lower price of products (mobile phones)
    • • Bharti: demand = earrings, local resource = jute
    • • Jobs for 2 + 3 local women, farmer earns more
  4. 4. Qualities of an entrepreneur

Okay, so let's talk about qualities.

    • • Quality = a way a person acts or behaves

    • • Try new ideas, take responsibility
    • • Think before deciding, do not give up
    • • Ravi listens calmly = patient
    • • Susheela owns her loss = takes responsibility
  5. 5. Functions of an entrepreneur

Okay, so every entrepreneur runs a different business.

    • • Function = working in a way
    • • 1. Making decisions
    • • 2. Managing the business
    • • 3. Divide income
    • • 4. Taking risk (risk = chance of something going wrong)
    • • 5. Create a new method, idea or product
  6. 6. Myths: unique ideas and big money

Okay, so let's talk about myths.

    • • Myth / misconception = a false belief
    • • Myth 1: every idea must be unique
    • • Truth: do something different with an old idea
    • • Ganesh: 200 cars, 75 luxury
    • • Capital = money used to start a business
    • • Myth 2: you need a lot of capital (false)
  7. 7. Myths: big business and being born an entrepreneur

Okay, so myth 3 — only big business owners are entrepreneurs.

    • • Myth 3: only big business owners are entrepreneurs
    • • Sheila's taxi: newspaper, TV, numbers board
    • • No business is big or small
    • • Myth 4: entrepreneurs are born, not made
    • • Truth: it starts with a way of thinking
  8. 8. Entrepreneurship as a career

Okay, so let's talk about entrepreneurship as a career.

    • • Career = a line of work taken for life
    • • Doctor at hospital = wage employed
    • • Doctor with own clinic = self-employed
    • • Process: ENTER → SURVIVE → GROW
    • • Sanjana: starts store → beats competition → chain of stores

Summary

Okay, so let's quickly go over what we learnt today. An entrepreneur is a self-employed person. She keeps making her business better, with new ideas, and by taking risks. Remember Ramya, with her plant shop? That's exactly what she did. Entrepreneurs fulfil customer needs, they use local materials, and they help society. Because of this, they create jobs, they share wealth, and they bring down prices of products. Bharti did just that, with her jute earrings. Now, think about what makes an entrepreneur successful. She's confident, patient, creative and hardworking. And she has five functions — making decisions, managing the business, dividing income, taking risk, and creating new methods, ideas or products. We also broke four myths today. An idea does not have to be unique. You do not need a lot of capital. No business is big or small. And entrepreneurs are made, not born. Finally, we saw that entrepreneurship can be a career, and that every entrepreneur goes through three stages — Enter, Survive, and Grow. So tell me — out of all these, which one stage do you think is the hardest to cross?
