Chapter 3: ICT Skills-II — notes
The chapter’s 5 parts in the book’s order — the first idea of each and the points Medha Ma’am writes on the board — and the summary at the end. The full lesson and a check question for each part are in the app.
1. Starting a Computer: Hardware, Software and BIOS
Okay, so let's talk about what makes up a computer system.
- • Hardware = physical parts (keyboard, monitor, CPU)
- • Software = makes hardware work (cannot touch it)
- • OS = most important software (Ubuntu, Windows, Mac OS, iOS, Android)
- • Power button pressed -> BIOS runs
- • BIOS does self-test -> loads Operating System
- • Desktop appears, ready for input
2. Login, Logout and Using Keyboard & Mouse
Just as you keep your cupboard locked at home, you need to keep your computer locked when you are not using it, so that no unauthorised person can see or change your information.
- • Login-ID + password = key to lock your computer
- • Logout when work is finished
- • Keyboard: F1-F12 = function keys (F1 = help)
- • HOME/END = move cursor to line's end
- • PAGE UP/PAGE DOWN = move one page up/down
- • Mouse: hover, click, double-click, drag and drop
3. Files and Folders
Okay, so let's talk about files and folders.
- • File = stores information; has name + extension
- • Extension examples: .txt, .doc, .xls, .jpg, .mp3
- • Folder = location to store a group of files
- • Create file: open editor -> type text -> Save -> choose folder -> name file -> Save
- • Create folder: choose location -> right-click -> New Folder -> type name
4. Taking Care of Your Computer
Okay, so — you take care of your body, right?
- • Clean keyboard: soft brush; Clean screen: soft cloth
- • Avoid food/drinks near computer
- • Keep device cool: CPU fan working, avoid sun
- • Unplug once charged 100% (no overcharging)
- • Don't run too many programs at once
- • Backup data = save info on CD/DVD or hard disk
5. Computer Security, Threats and Protecting Data
Okay, so — let's talk about computer security.
- • Security break = leakage of information
- • Threats: Theft (physical, identity, software piracy)
- • Viruses: Worm (replicates), Trojan Horse (disguised)
- • Also: Online predators, Internet scams
- • Protect data: strong password (letters+numbers+symbols)
- • Use anti-virus/firewall; encrypt data; use https:// sites
Summary
Okay, so let's look back at everything we covered. First, you learned how a computer starts up. The BIOS does a self-test, and then the Operating System loads the desktop. You also saw how hardware and software work together. Then, you learned how login IDs and passwords keep your computer locked and safe. You practiced keyboard keys and mouse actions too — hover, click, double-click, and drag and drop. Good, that part you handled well. Next, you learned that every file has a name and an extension, like .txt, .jpg, and .mp3. And these files live inside folders, which you can create in Ubuntu. After that, you discovered why taking care of your computer matters — cleaning it, keeping food and drink away, keeping it cool, and following a maintenance schedule. This keeps it working well for a long time. Finally, you learned about threats — theft, Worms, Trojan Horses, online predators, and internet scams. And you saw how strong passwords, anti-virus, encryption, and secure sites protect your data. So, tell me — out of all this, which part did you enjoy learning the most?
