Chapter 2: Self-Management Skills-II — notes

The chapter’s 5 parts in the book’s order — the first idea of each and the points Medha Ma’am writes on the board — and the summary at the end. The full lesson and a check question for each part are in the app.

  1. 1. Stress and Stress Management

Okay, so — have you ever felt worried before an exam?

    • • Stress = reaction to perceived demands/threats (stressors)
    • • ABC: Adversity, Beliefs, Consequences
    • • Step 1: Be aware you are stressed
    • • Step 2: Identify the cause
    • • Step 3: Apply stress management methods
    • • Techniques: time management, exercise, diet, positivity, sleep
  2. 2. Self-awareness - Strength and Weakness Analysis

    Okay, so — let's talk about self-awareness.

    • • Self-awareness = knowing your strengths and weaknesses
    • • Know yourself: background, likes/dislikes, values, beliefs, opinions
    • • Find strengths: what you succeed at, what others like in you
    • • Find weaknesses: where you struggle, feedback from others
    • • Interests = what you like doing
    • • Abilities = acquired/natural capacity to perform well
  3. 3. Self-motivation

Remember the story of the hare and the tortoise - the tortoise won because it never thought less of itself and stayed motivated even while lagging behind, slowly crossing all hurdles.

    • • Self-motivation = inner force that drives you to act
    • • Internal motivation (LOVE): happiness, feeling good
    • • External motivation (REWARD): respect, recognition, appreciation
    • • 4 steps: find strengths, set goals, plan with timelines, stay loyal
  4. 4. Self-regulation - Goal Setting with SMART

Okay, so think about this — if you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.

    • • Goal = dream with a deadline
    • • Goal setting = list goals + plan to achieve them
    • • SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time bound
    • • Specific: answers who, what, where, when, which means, why
    • • Example time bound: lose 10 kg in next 6 months
  5. 5. Self-regulation - Time Management

    Okay, so remember Sameer?

    • • Time management = plan and control how you spend your hours
    • • Step 1: Organise - plan activities, make timetable
    • • Step 2: Prioritise - rank to-do list by importance
    • • Step 3: Control - avoid time wasters
    • • Step 4: Track - note where time was spent

Summary

Okay, so let's go back over everything we've learnt in this chapter. First — stress. Stress is just your reaction to stressors. You manage it through the ABC, and through three steps — being aware, finding the cause, and then applying techniques, like exercise, diet, positivity and sleep. Second — self-awareness. That means knowing yourself, so you can find your strengths and weaknesses. It also means telling apart your interests from your abilities. Third — self-motivation. This is the inner force that drives you. It comes either from internal LOVE, or from external REWARD, and it's built through four steps, ending in staying loyal to your goals. Fourth — goal setting. Here we use the SMART method — Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time bound. This is what turns a dream into a clear plan. And finally — time management. This means organising, prioritising, controlling and tracking how you use your day. Remember the tortoise, and remember Sameer — one reached the goal, one didn't. So tell me — out of all five ideas, which one do you think you need to work on the most?
