Chapter 9: The Book That Saved the Earth — notes
The chapter’s 8 parts in the book’s order — the first idea of each and the points Medha Ma’am writes on the board — and the summary at the end. The full lesson and a check question for each part are in the app.
1. The Era of the Book and the Martian Invasion of 2040
Okay, so let's step into the twenty-fifth century.
- • Twentieth century = 'Era of the Book'
- • Books: taught how, when, where, why to do things
- • They illustrated, educated, punctuated, decorated
- • 2040 = year of the Martian invasion
- • Historian uses the historiscope to show the past
2. Great and Mighty Think-Tank and his orders
Okay, so now the historiscope takes us to Mars Space Control.
- • Think-Tank = Commander-in-Chief, Ruler of Mars and her two moons
- • Noodle = Apprentice, must give full salutation
- • Mirror scene: 'Who is most gifted?' - 'You, sir.'
- • Think-Tank calls Earth 'that ridiculous little planet'
- • Orders: invade Earth before lunch
3. The Martian crew lands in the library
Okay, so let's meet our Martian visitors.
- • Crew: Captain Omega, Lieutenant Iota, Sergeant Oop
- • Location: Centerville Public Library (a 'square place')
- • Iota counts 2000 'peculiar items' (books)
- • Oop's guesses: storage barn, hats, haberdashery
- • They consult Think-Tank for the answer
4. Books mistaken for sandwiches
Okay, so Omega holds up a book for Think-Tank to look at.
- • Think-Tank: book = 'a sandwich' (bread + filling)
- • Order: 'eat it' - passed from Omega to Iota to Oop
- • Oop eats it: 'not delicious... dry as Martian dust'
- • Noodle's data: sandwiches used for communication, not eating
- • Think-Tank orders: 'listen to them' - they hear nothing
5. Discovering the 'code' and taking vitamins
Okay, so Noodle remembers something odd about the Earthlings.
- • Noodle: Earthlings 'watched' sandwiches, didn't listen
- • Think-Tank: sandwiches = for eye communication
- • Book picked up: large volume of Mother Goose
- • Squiggles and dots beside pictures = 'the code'
- • Vitamins swallowed to help decipher the code
6. Nursery rhymes read as threats
Okay, so now Omega, Iota and Oop start reading nursery rhymes out loud.
- • Mary's garden (cockle shells, silver bells) -> 'growing metals & explosives'
- • Hey diddle diddle (cow jumps moon, dish runs with spoon) -> 'animals have space techniques'
- • Each rhyme = proof Earth is too advanced to invade
- • Think-Tank repeatedly halts the invasion fleet
7. Humpty Dumpty and the great escape
Okay, so now Oop picks up one more rhyme.
- • Oop reads: Humpty Dumpty rhyme, 'had a great fall'
- • Humpty Dumpty's picture looks like Think-Tank's big head
- • Think-Tank panics: thinks Earthlings plan his capture
- • Orders: evacuate Mars, flee to Alpha Centauri (100 million miles away)
- • Result: invasion cancelled, Earth saved
8. Five centuries later
Okay, so let's finish the Historian's story.
- • 500 years later: Earth and Mars become friendly
- • Noodle replaces Think-Tank as the new Martian ruler
- • Earthlings teach Martians to read; set up library in Marsopolis
- • One book Martians still avoid: Mother Goose
Summary
The play opens in the twenty-fifth century, where the Historian explains that the twentieth century was called the Era of the Book, and then uses her historiscope to show us the Martian invasion of 2040. We meet the proud Great and Mighty Think-Tank, who sends a crew to invade Earth, thinking it an insignificant planet. The crew lands inside the Centerville Public Library and mistakes books first for sandwiches and then, after taking intelligence vitamins, reads them as a mysterious code. Nursery rhymes like 'Mistress Mary,' 'Hey diddle diddle,' and finally 'Humpty Dumpty' are wildly misread by Think-Tank as proof that Earth is too advanced and dangerous, until the Humpty Dumpty picture, resembling his own head, terrifies him into cancelling the invasion and fleeing. Five hundred years later, Earth and Mars become friends, Noodle becomes the new Martian ruler, and the Martians learn to read — except for the one book that once saved the Earth, Mother Goose.
