The chapter’s 6 parts in the book’s order — the first idea of each and the points Medha Ma’am writes on the board — and the summary at the end. The full lesson and a check question for each part are in the app.

  1. 1. Who Mme Loisel is, and why she is unhappy

Okay, so let's meet Mme Loisel.

    • • Mme Loisel: pretty, born into a clerk's family
    • • No dowry gt married a petty clerk
    • • She suffered: felt born for luxury, had none
    • • Husband happy with potpie; she dreamed of grand dinners
    • • Rich friend's visits left her weeping for days
  2. 2. The invitation and the dress

Okay, so one evening, her husband comes home very excited.

    • • Invitation from the Minister: Monday, January 18
    • • Mme Loisel unhappy: no proper dress
    • • Dress needed: four hundred francs
    • • Loisel had saved this sum for a gun
    • • He still gives her the four hundred francs
  3. 3. The borrowed necklace

Okay, so even with her new dress, Mme Loisel was still sad.

    • • Problem: no jewel to wear
    • • Husband's idea: borrow from Mme Forestier
    • • Jewel-case opened: bracelets, pearl collar, Venetian cross
    • • She chooses: a superb diamond necklace
    • • At the ball: she is the prettiest, a great success
  4. 4. The necklace is lost

Okay, so the ball was over, and it was four in the morning.

    • • After the ball: no cab found, they walk, shivering
    • • Home at last: necklace gone from her neck!
    • • Search dress, cloak, pockets gt nothing found
    • • Loisel: police, cab offices, newspaper advertisement
    • • After a week: hope lost gt must replace the jewel
  5. 5. Replacing the necklace and ten years of debt

    Okay, so Loisel needed time.

    • • Letter to Mme Forestier: clasp broken, being repaired
    • • New necklace found: valued 40,000 francs, bought for 36,000
    • • Loisel: 18,000 francs + borrowed rest from usurers
    • • Mme Loisel's life: maid sent away, moved to an attic
    • • Ten years of hard work gt debt fully repaid
  6. 6. The truth, at last

Okay, so let's move to the ending.

    • • Meeting in the Champs-Elysees: Mme Forestier, still pretty
    • • Mme Loisel reveals the truth: necklace was lost
    • • Replaced it; ten years to pay for it
    • • Mme Forestier: 'Mine were false!'
    • • Worth: not over five hundred francs

Summary

Okay, so let's look back at the whole story. It begins with Mme Loisel, a pretty woman, but unhappy. She feels she was born for a luxurious life, yet she lives among ordinary clerks. Then an invitation comes, for a grand party. First there's the problem of a dress — that's solved with four hundred francs. Then there's the problem of jewellery, and she solves that by borrowing a diamond necklace from her rich friend, Mme Forestier. At the ball, she's a great success. But when she gets home, she finds the necklace is lost. They search everywhere, frantically, but it's never found. So the Loisels borrow heavily, and buy an identical replacement. And then — ten hard years of poverty and labour, just to pay off that debt. Years later, Mme Loisel meets Mme Forestier again, and finally tells her the truth. And that's when she learns the original necklace was false, worth very little. Now, why do you think Maupassant waited till the very end to reveal that twist?
