Chapter 2: Modals — notes

The chapter’s 5 parts in the book’s order — the first idea of each and the points Medha Ma’am writes on the board — and the summary at the end. The full lesson and a check question for each part are in the app.

  1. 1. What the examiner asks in this part now

    Medha Ma'am here.

    • • Form: one sentence + one blank + 4 modal options
    • • Setting changes (report, recipe, notice) but task doesn't
    • • Only ONE correct option — pick by meaning + tense
  2. 2. How to work each kind — the steps

Okay, so here's how you reach the right option every time.

    • • 1. Find the job of the blank (duty/permission/future-span/advice)
    • • 2. Spot the time clue in the sentence
    • • 3. Test each option against meaning + time clue
    • • 4. Keep the one that matches both
  3. 3. The questions walked through

Okay, so let's walk through the questions you were actually given.

    • • '...adhere to civic norms' → ought to (moral duty)
    • • can = ability only; will be = not a fitting modal phrase; might = too weak
    • • '...help me cross the road?' → Will (polite direct request)
    • • may = asking permission for self; shall = suggestion/offer; might = too tentative
  4. 4. The questions walked through (continued)

    Now the two trickier ones.

    • • 'by the end of...for eight months' → will have been working (future perfect continuous)
    • • will be working = simple future only; will have working = not valid; would have been = unreal/past sense
    • • Recipe instruction step → must (necessary instruction)
    • • would = habitual/hypothetical; might/may = merely optional, wrong for a firm step
  5. 5. How to practise

Okay, so let's talk about how to practise this.

    • • Attempt first, by yourself — then read the model answer
    • • Cover every question in the Library, not just a few
    • • Each question trains a different sense: duty, request, instruction, future span

Summary

Okay, so let's recap what we've done today. Every question here gives you one sentence, with a single blank, and four modal options. Your job is to find the sense the sentence wants. Is it duty, a request, permission, an instruction, or a future span? Along with that, look for the time clues sitting in the sentence. See, 'ought to' and 'must' fit civic duties or recipe steps — things you're supposed to do. 'Will you' fits a direct, polite request. And 'will have been working' fits a future point joined with an ongoing duration. So here's the rule — always test each option against two things, the meaning, and the tense clue. If an option softens the sense, or shifts the time, or breaks either one, you eliminate it. Use the Library to attempt every board question on your own first. Then read why the correct one fits, and why the others don't. Do this enough times, and the pattern becomes automatic. Tell me — between 'must' and 'ought to', which one feels stronger to you?
