Chapter 1: A Triumph of Surgery — notes

The chapter’s 6 parts in the book’s order — the first idea of each and the points Medha Ma’am writes on the board — and the summary at the end. The full lesson and a check question for each part are in the app.

  1. 1. Tricki's sorry state

    Okay, so let's meet Tricki.

    • • Tricki: small, pampered, overfed dog
    • • Owner: Mrs Pumphrey, rich mistress
    • • Symptoms: hugely fat, bloodshot eyes, tongue lolling, listless
    • • Mrs Pumphrey's cause: malt, cod-liver oil, Horlicks
    • • Real cause: greed, too much food, no exercise
    • • Narrator: Mr Herriot, a veterinary surgeon
  2. 2. Mr Herriot's advice and Tricki worsens

Okay, so let's see what Mr Herriot tells Mrs Pumphrey.

    • • Mr Herriot's advice: cut food, give more exercise
    • • Mrs Pumphrey tries, but relents because Tricki 'loves' cream cakes and chocolates
    • • Result: Tricki refuses food, vomits, lies panting on a rug
    • • He does not want to walk or do anything
  3. 3. Tricki is taken to the surgery

Okay, so Mr Herriot decides something important.

    • • Mr Herriot's plan: hospitalise Tricki for about a fortnight
    • • Mrs Pumphrey: distraught, fears he will pine and die
    • • Staff bring: day bed, night bed, cushions, toys, rubber rings, bowls
    • • Car cannot hold it all; coats thrown through window
    • • Everyone in tears as car leaves
  4. 4. Tricki recovers at the surgery

Okay, so let's see what happens to Tricki at the surgery.

    • • Day 1-2: no food, plenty of water
    • • Day 3: shows interest, whimpers at dogs
    • • Let out: joins pack, rolls, plays
    • • Extra bowl given; joins mealtime rush
    • • No medicinal treatment; recovers through play and exercise
    • • Also hunts rats in the old henhouse at night
  5. 5. Mrs Pumphrey's gifts and Tricki's full recovery

Okay, so Tricki is recovering now.

    • • Mrs Pumphrey rings many times a day for news
    • • 'Convalescing' brings: fresh eggs (two dozen at a time)
    • • Then: bottles of wine 'to enrich Tricki's blood'
    • • Then: brandy 'for a final edge on his constitution'
    • • Temptation to keep Tricki longer, but Mr Herriot calls after a fortnight
  6. 6. Tricki goes home: a triumph of surgery

Okay, so a fortnight goes by, and a huge car comes for Tricki.

    • • Tricki transformed: lithe, hard-muscled, keeps up with pack
    • • Leaps into Mrs Pumphrey's lap, licking and barking
    • • Beds, toys, cushions, coats, bowls: all unused
    • • Mrs Pumphrey, in tears, calls it 'a triumph of surgery'
    • • Real cause of recovery: diet, water, exercise, play - not surgery

Summary

Okay, so let's go back over the whole story once more. It starts with Tricki, Mrs Pumphrey's little dog. She feeds him too much, he gets no exercise, and he turns hugely fat and listless. Mr Herriot warns her — cut his food, increase his activity. Despite that warning, Tricki grows seriously ill, he stops eating, and he starts vomiting. So Mr Herriot takes the firm step of hospitalising him at the surgery. There, for two days, he gets no food at all — just plenty of water. After that, he's allowed to mix and play with the other dogs in the house. Notice something — there's no medicine anywhere in this treatment. Just controlled eating and exercise, and that's what brings Tricki back to health, quickly too. Meanwhile, anxious Mrs Pumphrey keeps sending eggs, wine and brandy for him, and the staff happily enjoy all of it themselves. After a fortnight, Tricki goes home — lithe, active, leaping joyfully into his mistress's lap. Mrs Pumphrey is delighted, and she calls his recovery "a triumph of surgery." But think about it — was it really surgery that cured him, or just plain diet and exercise? Now let's look at the board.
