Chapter 3: ICT Skills-II — notes
The chapter’s 5 parts in the book’s order — the first idea of each and the points Medha Ma’am writes on the board — and the summary at the end. The full lesson and a check question for each part are in the app.
1. Starting a Computer: Hardware, Software and BIOS
Okay, so let's talk about ICT.
- • ICT = Information and Communication Technology
- • Hardware = physical parts (keyboard, monitor, CPU)
- • Software = makes hardware work (Operating System)
- • Power on -> BIOS self-test -> loads OS
- • Login-ID + password = lock the computer
- • Shut down: Systems button -> Shut Down
2. Using the Keyboard and Mouse
Okay, so let's talk about the keyboard.
- • Keyboard = input device for text, numbers, commands
- • F1-F12 = function keys (F1 = help)
- • ENTER/RETURN = new line or confirm task
- • HOME/END = move to left/right of line
- • Mouse: hover, point and click, drag and drop, double-click
- • Double-click = quick click twice to open a file
3. Files, Folders and Shortcut Keys
Okay, so let's talk about files and folders.
- • File = stores information; has name + extension
- • .txt (text), .jpg (image), .mp3 (sound)
- • Folder = location to store a group of files
- • Create file: open editor -> type -> Save -> name it
- • Create folder: right-click -> New Folder -> name it
- • CTRL+c copy, CTRL+v paste, CTRL+s save
4. Taking Care of Your Computer
Okay, so a computer is a delicate machine, with lots of tiny electronic parts inside.
- • Clean screen with soft cloth, keyboard with soft brush
- • No food/drinks near computer
- • Keep device cool; don't overcharge battery
- • Don't run too many programs at once
- • Maintenance: daily, weekly, monthly, yearly tasks
- • Backup data = save info on CD/DVD or hard disk
5. Computer Security, Threats and Protecting Data
Okay, so — your computer stores a lot of personal stuff.
- • Security break = leakage of information
- • Threats: theft (physical, identity, piracy), viruses
- • Worms = replicate and spread; Trojan Horse = disguised virus
- • Online predators, Internet scams
- • Protect: strong password (letters+numbers+symbols)
- • Anti-virus/Firewall, encryption, https:// with lock symbol
Summary
Okay, so let's go back over everything we covered today. We started with ICT — that's Information and Communication Technology. You learned a computer works through hardware and software, and that it starts up through something called BIOS, then login, then logout, and finally a proper shut down. We also went through the keyboard parts, and the mouse actions — hover, click, drag and drop, and double-click. Remember, files have names and extensions, like .txt, .jpg and .mp3, and folders help us organise all these files neatly. We also picked up some handy shortcut keys, like CTRL+c and CTRL+v. Then we talked about taking care of a computer — cleaning it, handling it carefully, keeping it cool, and following a maintenance schedule. That keeps it working well, and it saves money too. Finally, we looked at threats — things like theft, viruses such as Worms and the Trojan Horse, online predators, and scams. And we saw how to protect our data — with strong passwords, anti-virus, encryption, and secure https:// sites. That's a lot we've covered, isn't it? Tell me — which one of these do you think you'll use the most at home?
