    AskMedha’s AI teacher

Model answer · human activities depleting flora and fauna

    1. 1.Large-scale deforestation for agricultural expansion is one of the main human activities responsible for the depletion of flora and fauna. Due to agriculture and extension of constructed areas, forests are being destroyed. As more and more land is cleared for growing crops, the natural habitats of plants and animals are lost, which leads to the rapid depletion of forests.1 mark
    2. 2.Industrialization and urbanization are also causing forest destruction and putting the existence of wild life at risk. As industries grow and urban areas expand, forest land is cleared for construction of factories, buildings and towns. In the absence of adequate forest cover, there has been a decline in wild life also.1 mark
    3. 3.Overgrazing by animals and cutting of wood for fuel are reducing forest density. Lack of awakening about the significance of the forests is the most important factor for the rapid depletion of the forests. Such activities steadily thin out the forest cover and disturb the natural habitat of flora and fauna.1 mark
    4. 4.Hunting, illegal trade and environmental pollution have pushed many species of animals to the verge of extinction. A steep decline in the number of wild life has been registered due to unmindful cutting of the forests and poaching of wild animals and birds. Earlier, migratory birds were trapped on a large scale at Kusheshwar Asthan, showing how hunting and illegal trade endanger wild animals and birds.1 mark
    • Write 'forests are being destroyed' due to agriculture and extension of constructed areas in the first point.
    • Mention 'decline in wild life' due to lack of adequate forest cover in the second point.
    • Use the words 'poaching of wild animals and birds' and 'trapped' migratory birds to earn the last point.

Discuss the problems of agriculture in Bihar.

    Medha Ma’am

    Medha Ma’am

    AskMedha’s AI teacher

Model answer · problems of agriculture in Bihar

    1. 1.The main problem of agriculture in Bihar is that it is dependent on Monsoon which is also prone to frequent flood and drought but still there is no proper arrangement of irrigation. Out of the total agricultural land only 46 percent is having irrigational facilities and the rest remains without proper irrigation facility. This excessive dependence on monsoon and lack of irrigation facilities makes agriculture unreliable.1 mark
    2. 2.In Bihar the agricultural fields are of very small size and the size of the land holding keeps getting smaller due to fragmentation of fields among family members. As a result of this small size of the agricultural fields, application of scientific method in agricultural activities is not possible, which reduces productivity.1 mark
    3. 3.Most of the rivers of the state are famous for their devastating floods. These rivers coming down from Himalayas carry huge amount of silt with them and deposit it on their bed which causes the change in its normal course as a result of which disastrous flood occurs which causes heavy loss to life and property. According to planning commission, 64 lakh hectares of land is prone to floods in Bihar. Along with floods, droughts also occur in the state, and this recurring problem of floods and droughts causes heavy damage to Bihar's agriculture every year.1 mark
    4. 4.The backwardness of agriculture in Bihar persists due to the use of inferior quality seeds; as high quality, improved seeds are not used, the per hectare yield is very less in comparison to other states. Along with this, lack of modern agricultural tools and continuous use of chemical fertilizers, which causes deterioration in the quality of soil, also keep agriculture backward. Besides, the orthodox opinion of the farmers, who believe less in hard work and more on luck and orthodox views, also prevents modernisation of agriculture.1 mark
    • In point 1 write the exact figure '46 percent' having irrigational facilities to show the irrigation problem clearly.
    • In point 3 mention '64 lakh hectares of land is prone to floods' to support the floods and droughts point.

Describe the importance of the role of local communities in the management and restoration of forests.

    Medha Ma’am

    Medha Ma’am

    AskMedha’s AI teacher

Model answer · role of local communities, forest management

    1. 1.Local communities depend on forest resources for their livelihood and hence have a direct stake in the conservation and sustainable use of forests. Because their survival is closely linked with the availability of forest produce, they play an active role in forest management, and this active involvement of the local people prevents deforestation and helps in protecting the forest for future generations.1 mark
    2. 2.In the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan, villagers have fought against mining companies, taking advantage of the provisions in the Wildlife Protection Act, and have been successful in stopping mining activities in the area to save the forest and its wildlife.1 mark
    3. 3.The Chipko Movement in the Himalayas successfully resisted deforestation and promoted afforestation through community participation. In addition, in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, five villages came together to form the Bhairodev Dakav 'Sonchuri', declaring 1,200 hectares of forest as a 'rundh', where the local community imposed a complete ban on hunting, grazing and felling of trees.1 mark
    4. 4.Local communities have also contributed to forest restoration through initiatives like Beej Bachao Andolan and Navdanya, which promoted chemical-free, sustainable crop production. In West Bengal, the Forest Department involved local communities, especially women, in the protection of degraded sal forests through patrolling, which helped revive the forests. In Mizoram, local institutions among the people practising shifting cultivation developed new land-use patterns that reduced the practice of shifting cultivation without disturbing the ecological balance, thereby controlling deforestation.1 mark
    • Mention the Sariska Tiger Reserve, Rajasthan example with the Wildlife Protection Act by name.
    • Write both the Chipko Movement and the Bhairodev Dakav 'Sonchuri' example with the term 'rundh'.
    • For the last point, name at least one of: Beej Bachao Andolan/Navdanya, West Bengal sal forest women's patrolling, or Mizoram shifting cultivators.
