What is defect of vision ? How many types of it are there ?

Medha Ma’am
AskMedha’s AI teacher
Model answer · defects of vision, types
- 1.Defect of vision is the condition in which the eye may gradually lose its power of accommodation, so that the person cannot see the objects distinctly and comfortably. The vision becomes blurred due to the refractive defects of the eye.1 mark
- 2.There are mainly three common refractive defects of vision. These are (i) myopia or near-sightedness, (ii) Hypermetropia or far-sightedness, and (iii) Presbyopia. These defects can be corrected by the use of suitable spherical lenses.1 mark
- Write that the eye loses its power of accommodation and vision becomes blurred due to refractive defects of the eye.
- Name all three types exactly: myopia, hypermetropia and presbyopia.

What is farsightedness?

Medha Ma’am
AskMedha’s AI teacher
Model answer · hypermetropia (far-sightedness)
- 1.Hypermetropia is also known as far-sightedness. It is a vision defect in which a person can see distant objects clearly but cannot see nearby objects distinctly.1 mark
- 2.In this defect, the near point of the person is farther away from the normal near point of 25 cm, so the person has to keep reading material much beyond 25 cm from the eye for comfortable reading.1 mark
- Write the term 'Hypermetropia' and its synonym 'far-sightedness' at the start.
- State clearly that distant objects are seen clearly but nearby objects are not.
- Mention that the near point shifts farther than the normal near point of 25 cm.

What are defects of vision ? What are their types ? How are the defects resolved ?

Model answer · defects of vision, correction
- 1.A vision defect is a condition in which the eyes are unable to see objects clearly. Sometimes, the eye may gradually lose its power of accommodation, and in such conditions, the person cannot see the objects distinctly and comfortably. The vision becomes blurred due to the refractive defects of the eye.1 mark
- 2.Vision defects are mainly of three types: myopia, hypermetropia, and presbyopia. Myopia is also known as near-sightedness, in which a person can see nearby objects clearly but cannot see distant objects distinctly, because the image of a distant object is formed in front of the retina. This defect may arise due to excessive curvature of the eye lens, or elongation of the eyeball. Hypermetropia is also known as far-sightedness, in which a person can see distant objects clearly but cannot see nearby objects distinctly, because the light rays from a closeby object are focussed at a point behind the retina. This defect arises either because the focal length of the eye lens is too long, or the eyeball has become too small. Presbyopia is a defect in which the power of accommodation of the eye decreases with ageing, so that the near point gradually recedes away and the person finds it difficult to see nearby objects comfortably and distinctly. It arises due to the gradual weakening of the ciliary muscles and diminishing flexibility of the eye lens.1.5 marks
- 3.Myopia is corrected by using spectacles with a concave lens of suitable power. A concave lens of suitable power will bring the image back on to the retina and thus the defect is corrected.1.5 marks
- 4.Hypermetropia is corrected by using spectacles with a convex lens of appropriate power. Eye-glasses with converging lenses provide the additional focussing power required for forming the image on the retina.1 mark
- 5.Presbyopia is corrected by using spectacles with bifocal lenses. A common type of bi-focal lenses consists of both concave and convex lenses. The upper portion consists of a concave lens, which facilitates distant vision, while the lower part is a convex lens, which facilitates near vision.1 mark
Diagram: Draw three eye diagrams side by side: (1) myopic eye showing the image O formed in front of the retina, labelled 'Myopic Eye'; (2) correction for myopia showing a concave lens placed before the eye bringing the image O back onto the retina, labelled 'Correction for myopia'; (3) hypermetropic eye showing the image N formed behind the retina, labelled 'Hypermetropic eye', and correction for hypermetropia showing a convex lens bringing the image N onto the retina, labelled 'Correction for Hypermetropic eye'.
- Write the words 'myopia', 'hypermetropia' and 'presbyopia' clearly as the three types to earn point 2.
- State explicitly that myopia needs a 'concave lens' and hypermetropia needs a 'convex lens' to earn points 3 and 4.
- Mention 'bifocal lenses' and that they have a concave upper part and convex lower part to earn point 5.

- Q4Long answer6 marksAsked: 2023
What is the process of accommodation of human eye ? Explain it.
How the model answer begins
1. The ability of the eye lens to adjust its focal length is called accommodation. The eye lens is composed of a fibrous, jelly-like material and its curvature can be modified to some extent by the ciliary muscles. The…

How will you show by experiment that sunlight consists of seven colours?
How the model answer begins
1. To show that sunlight consists of seven colours, a narrow beam of sunlight is made to fall on one face of a glass prism in a dark room. For this, a small hole or narrow slit is made in a thick cardboard sheet and…

What do you mean by dispersion of light ? Explain the rainbow.
How the model answer begins
1. The splitting of white light into its component colours is called dispersion of light. When white light passes through a glass prism, it splits into a band of seven colours called its spectrum. The various colours seen…

What is persistence of vision ?
How the model answer begins
1. The impression of an image formed on the retina persists on the brain for about 1/16th of a second even after the object is removed from the eye.

What do you mean by power of lens ? Write its SI unit.
How the model answer begins
1. The power of a lens is the measure of the degree of convergence or divergence of light rays falling on it. The power of a lens is defined as the reciprocal of its focal length, that is, P = 1/f.
