Summary

Okay, so let's go back over this story once more. Who did we meet in this lesson? Mr Gessler — a German shoemaker in London. He ran Gessler Brothers with his elder brother, and he made the narrator's boots from the time the boy was just fourteen. Remember how he spoke about his work? He called boot-making an art. He even said, "Id is an Ardt!" And his boots — they lasted terribly long. Now, think about his way of working. He made only what was ordered, and he did all of it himself. In fact, he could tell at once if a pair came from a big firm — it was never his work. See, he was up against big firms, and they won their trade through advertisement, not through real work. That struggle cost him. First he gave up one of his two shops, it had become too expensive. Then, his elder brother died. And finally, he made his very best boots, and after that, he died of slow starvation. How did the narrator remember him in the end? Just simply — "he made good boots." Now tell me, why do you think those simple words meant so much?
