Chapter 2: Me and the Ecology Bit — notes
The chapter’s 5 parts in the book’s order — the first idea of each and the points Medha Ma’am writes on the board — and the summary at the end. The full lesson and a check question for each part are in the app.
1. Who is Jim and what does he do?
Okay, so let's meet someone new.
- • Jim has a paper route (collects money on Saturdays)
- • He tries to teach people about ecology while collecting
- • Everybody favours ecology, nobody acts on it
- • Jim gets only 'back talk' in return
2. Mr. Williams and the compost pile
Okay, so let's look at this little story about Jim.
- • Mr. Williams burns leaves in his backyard
- • Jim: burning leaves is bad ecology; make a compost pile instead
- • Compost = leaves + garbage + stuff, good for garden
- • Mr. Williams: compost pile is Jim's own job at home
- • Jim's badly made compost smells up the street ('nose pollution')
3. Ms. Greene and the garbage, litter, leash and papers
Okay, so, next Jim goes to Ms.
- • Ms. Greene keeps garbage in plastic bags on her lawn
- • She makes Jim pick up his own gum wrapper (he littered)
- • Law: dogs must be kept on a leash; Jim's dog messes her yard, tears bags
- • Jim: save papers & aluminium cans for school pickup, they can be made into new paper
- • Ms. Greene: last time Jim never came to collect them
4. Mr. Johnson, the car and the dead tree
Okay, so now Jim runs after Mr.
- • Mr. Johnson rushes to drive to post office (only 2 blocks away)
- • Jim: walk instead - good exercise, saves gas, no pollution
- • Mr. Johnson: Jim killed a young tree by jumping over it daily (shortcut)
- • No tree, no grass left there now
- • Jim's motorbike (summer) and snowmobile (winter) waste power, make noise pollution
- • Mr. Johnson goes in angry, without paying Jim
5. Jim's mother and the electric mixer
Okay, so — after all this tiring work of trying to teach people about ecology, Jim comes home.
- • Mother uses the electric mixer
- • Jim: use the old egg beater, save electricity; women use too many electric things
- • Mother: who watches TV twenty-seven hours a day around here?
- • Jim himself wastes electricity by watching too much TV
- • Conclusion: nobody willing to do anything about ecology, nobody listens to Jim
Summary
Okay, so let's recap this lesson. You learnt about Jim, a paper-route boy who tries to teach everyone about ecology while collecting money on Saturdays. Now, Mr. Williams showed something interesting — Jim's own compost pile, which was his job at home, smelled up the street. Then Ms. Greene pointed out Jim's own littering, his dog not on a leash, and his broken promise about collecting papers and cans for the school pickup. After that, Mr. Johnson showed that Jim had killed a little tree with his short-cut, and that his motorbike and snowmobile wasted power and made noise pollution. Finally, it was Jim's own mother who showed that Jim himself wasted electricity by watching too much TV. So think about it — nobody, not even Jim, truly practised what they preached about ecology. Tell me, why do you think it's so easy to tell others what to do, but so hard to do it ourselves?
